Ballon Meats regards environmental protection as an integral and essential part of good business practice. We are committed to achieving and maintaining a high standard of environmental quality in all our operations.
To achieve our goal to set the standard Ballon Meats will:

•• Seek to reduce consumption of materials in our operation. Reuse rather than dispose wherever possible and promote recycling and the use of recycled materials.
• Design energy efficiency into new building and equipment and manage energy wisely in all operations.
• Provide necessary training and support to staff so that they can carry out their responsibilities effectively and professionally. At a minimum meet and where appropriate exceed the requirements of all relevant legislation.

• Work with external groups and organisations to promote the concepts and practices of environmental protection.
• Work in partnership with our suppliers and customers in the adoption of environmentally sound practices .

One of the major environmentally friendly projects undertaken by our company has been the construction of an integrated wetlands system. This is the first project of it’s kind to be constructed by a meat company in Ireland and is used for the treatment of all waste water created on site.

The integrated wetland system was constructed five years ago and now covers twenty acres. Since then the area has become a wildlife sanctuary and attracts large amounts of wild birds, insects and mammals to the region. This type of system does not use chemicals in the treatment process and is therefore one of the most environmentally friendly ways of treating our waste waters.

As part of our ongoing environmental scheme the company has established a willow plantation , this consisted of planting over 11,000 willow trees , when the trees are harvested the wood chips will be used as fuel for a bioenergy boiler . In 2009  we have also decided to source all the power supply to the business from renewable sources .

With both the integrated wetland system, the willow plantation and the renewable energy supply  in place, Ballon Meats have helped reduce its carbon foot print .

To ensure that our operation does not cause environmental pollution the overall responsibility for environmental protection lies with the Chief Executive Officer of Ballon Meats.
